I am really NOT a "Shop till you Drop" Person....as a full time agent, there is little time to make shopping a career. But....I have been told I have "an eye" for decorating. My husband doesn't exactly understand the concept of when things are on sale, "the more you spend, the more you save." I think it is a guy thing....Every woman I know, understands it perfectly!
We had a house that "Grandpa" had lived in for 30 years. His wife had passed away a number of years ago his son felt that it would be better if Dad would move closer to him in the next county. The son bought a lovely side by side ranch duplex moved Dad in one side and his daughter in the other. When Grandpa was "in residence" he was the best housekeeper ever...bed was always made, floors clean, bath scrubbed, grass cut...you couldn't ask for any more. However....the carpet was dated, the mint green bedroom and pink tiled bathroom left buyers feeling that there was tooo much updating to do to make an offer regardless of what we felt to be a reasonable price.
Exit Grandpa to his new duplex...Take out the carpet to uncover the hardwood floors we had told people were hiding underneath...preserved by the padding, with a little work they were restored to their natural beauty. Bye Bye drapes....replace with artfully draped scarves of lighter colors...down with the shades. Out went the bright yellow kitchen....we had replaced the well worn vinyl floor with a brick-like gray no wax covering....and now the Chef was dancing on the kitchen valences, corner table with bright red cloth, walls now a muted gray...bright red kitchen towels...WOW ! On to the pink bathroom...a challenge. The Pink tile also used gray accents...Soooooo....a silvery shower curtain replaced the bright pink one, gray and pink towels....a flower arrangement, rug and matching toliet seat cover in gray....Now pink became the accent color to the neutral gray/silver...wow what a difference....In less than an hour we had done the window treatments and a little staging...hurry, hurry...the next agent ahd scheduled a showing...And.....a few hours later...An OFFER ! HOW MUCH FUN WAS THAT !
I'd like to say I will never see the husband's wrinkled brow in the home decor department again...but that probably won't happen...We have a listing that starts next week for a family that will have moved to Europe...I get to choose the paint and you guessed it...Decorations will travel...it pays to be prepared...to catch the eye of a buyer and get those offers !
