If It's "All About the Money"...You are Missing What it's All About

 The vast majority of our business is by referral. Referral can mean the siblings, the children, neighbors or friends of a past client...OR ...it can be a referral from aphone business associate that we may not know personally.

       We got a call recently....Caller ID indicated it was from an out of state number.  (If you are the person who assumes an unknown area code has to a telemarketer....you would be wrong.)  This call was a referral from one of our contractors to a woman who came in from out of state to sell her Mother's home.   Having done this for my own Mom, not that long ago...we had great empathy for her position.  As she went thru the things that brought back a flood of memories....the tears flowed....both hers and ours. She had begun to the things that she felt were necessary to put the house in the best possible salable condition for the desired market.

       On her "to do" list....was new carpeting. The present chardwood floorarpet was not worn but could be cleaned....but wait....let's take a peek in a corner...is there hardwood in the living room,hall and bedrooms ? YES....there is and the padding has served as a buffer and it is gorgeous ! 

     Our handy man could remove the carpet...and 

money saved there could be used for interior painting and other things.  We would update the window treatments, the cabinet hardware...touch up the outside trim....stage the bathroom...freshen the bedrooms with bedspreads ...it won't even look like the same house ! 

      We stopped and picked out paint and a light fixture on the way home and sent her texts with pictures.

     We left the house with the family distributing items and discarding and donating others ....a huge task.....and got a text from the Seller a short time later...

    text  "....it's so reassuring for us to have you on board...thank you for your expertise and your follow up with the details we discussed. You are truly wonderful."

     What IS truly wonderful is that there is a daughter who knows that she did the best thing she can do to honor her Mom's memory in putting her best house forward and wishing all the very best to the new family that will call the house that she lovingly took care of, their new home.

There are few things more valuable than good suggestions born of experience.

And I have to answer my phone because unknown numbers are often new clients.  But I sure am getting a lot of the wasteful marketing calls!

Hi Sally, the only calls I don't take come from "800" numbers. I figure they ar etrying to sell me something I don't want. Otherwise those out-of-area calls can be gold.

Anyone in this business who is only "all about the money" is missing out on the best part of being in it.  The payback one gets from going above and beyond for one's clients can't be measured in dollars and cents alone.

As for your comment about out of area codes being telemarketers, we just can't think that way anymore. Today I already received two calls with a local 704 code who were telemarketers.
