Every May, the United States Postal Service has STAMP OUT HUNGER Day. You have probably already gotten the plastic bag added to your mail that reminds you of this drive that will have non perishable food picked up by your mail carrier this Saturday.\ If you have not gotten a bag....use your own plastic bag thick enough to bear the weight of the generous contents you will add to it.
We go to one of the large discount grocers and find cases of canned goods reasonably priced. Welcome items include...Of course Chef David's Spaghettios...or Ravioli, soups of all flavors, canned vegetables, boxed dinners and sidedishes including macaroni and cheese and other pasta.
Last year, this drive by the National Associatioin of Letter Carriers collected over 71 million pouonds of food feeding an estimated 30 Million people !
In our donation we always include jars of baby food and cereal. We also believe that having less money shouldn't mean that you have less fun...powdered drinks, lemonade..brownie mix and popcorn are part of our donation shopping list. Jars of peanut butter and jelly are also most welcome.
Hunger does not know a season...food banks traditionally have lower inventory this time of year and really need and appreciate your generousity.
It always seems to pick that day to rain so we put out lawn chairs and secure the plastic bags protect the contents of our donations.
If for some reason (we heard about this in prior years) the carriers in your area and postal employees are not participating...Particpate yourself...with a donation in a food barrel in a grocery store or to the local food pantry or church that has a food collection site.
No one should ever go to bed hungry.....and you can be a part of the solution by your kind participation in this national event. Be generous.
