A southwestern suburb of Milwaukee, Greendale has a population of just over 14,000 and is home to the quaint village shopping district...reminding one of the holiday minature villages with City Hall on the north end and both sides of the street lined with little shops and restaurants. The village was designed by the Department of Agriculture during the depression as a "greenbelt" village with the perimeter being parks, green space and recreation areas. The government built housing using stone block that provided reasonable cost during difficult economic times. The homes, without basements, still in the Village are called "originals."
